At the brilliant Carrickshock hosted National Open Day showcasing some of the best British Friesian cows in Ireland, the club announced the winners and runners up in the second year of the revamped national herds competition. The support of Axa Insurance has enabled us to bring judges from the UK, and this year the task was performed energetically by Mr Adam Lawson of the Lismulligan Herd in Scotland. For four days Adam left his own farm and herd to come and visit the 18 herds in FIVE counties. Photographing, noting and considering each herd.
Up for grabs was the honour of winning, receiving a beautiful glass from The Irish Handmade Glass Company in Waterford, and in the inspection only classes, a club trophy.
Notes from the judge, Adam Lawson
It was a huge pleasure to judge your Herd Competition this year. I thoroughly enjoyed my four days travelling around the 18 herds. I was really impressed with the quality of cows that I saw and that has made my job of judging very difficult. Thank you all for making me feel so welcome and for taking the time to show me your herds.
With a special mention on the Judge's Choice Award for the winner, Sam Dudley, Dekeana
Sam is a very enthusiastic young breeder who is developing a very good herd of cows. He has a great knowledge of the breed and his herd.
Our photo collection below shows club chair Paddy Quealy doing the formalities, and then the presentation of the awards with the help of young members Jo Quealy (Grenan) and Aoife Mahony (Shangan) who worked had to help the presentation and flow of awards was uninterrupted - thanks Jo & Aoife!
A big thanks too to Kim Norton, Branch Manager for Axa Insurance in Kilkenny who came to present the awards and be part of the celebration of the competition.
Also on hand for the presentations was the president of the IHFA, Mr John O'Sullivan who in his remarks was positive and appreciative of the British Friesians on display for the open day. A full report of the open day, so brilliantly hosted by Pat & Claire Cleary, will be published separately, including a report on the celebration sale.
